‘British motives towards Zimbabwe have been sinister ever since Rhodes showed up uninvited on our doorstep many years ago,’ he answered. ‘At the core of the dispute is land. The colonialists
believe that they have a right to determine the identity of the recipients of their largesse.
They also harbour the misconception that they have the power to determine the timing of the return of the land to the dispossessed people of our country. On the other hand, our indigenous people have no wish to remain tied to the old Empire by this historical umbilical cord.
But the British don’t appreciate the fact that the Empire is dead in the minds of the indigenous
people of today. British nostalgia for Rhodesia is misplaced because the black people of Zimbabwe have moved on into an exciting
new era where they have determined their destiny.’ Page 196
